…the show may end in controlled creative chaos…
FROM: A You-Us History Project is dog & pony dc’s first foray into creating theatre for young audiences, which we are honored to do in partnership with Honolulu Theatre for Youth (HTY). FROM is a theatrical exchange program, a re-imagining of pen pals that allows students from two iconic U.S. capital cities to connect in new and creative ways using technology during a theatrical performance. FROM is being co-created and, ultimately, will be simultaneously produced by dog & pony dc and Honolulu HTY in Washington, DC and Honolulu, HI.
What might FROM look like when full produced? We currently imagine the show starting visually and aurally quiet, with a librarian informing the audience of DC students that they have been selected to become pen pals with a group of students in Honolulu; the show may end in controlled creative chaos, with groups of students using large menageries of props and costumes to create and send video postcards to student audiences in Honolulu depicting uniquely Washington, DC sensorial experiences.
In the early part of 2016 dog & pony dc developed a relationship with E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in our home neighborhood of Petworth. We created and executed an in-school residency modeled after dog & pony dc and HTY devising activities to explore identity formation–Where are you “from?”–and then facilitated it in fifth and eighth grade classrooms.
Our Honolulu collaborators will be visiting DC in June 2016 to work on the production more, so stay tuned for information about public devising events in conjunction with their visit.
